I’m Jennifer Lillie, Realtor with Cressy & Everett in South Bend. Today, I reflect on Lou Holtz, who passed away on March 4, 2026, at 89. Growing up here, attending games during his era (1986-96) profoundly inspired me.

As a young girl, the 1988 season was magical—starting with a 19-17 Michigan win, culminating in the Fiesta Bowl national title over West Virginia, 34-21. The stadium’s energy taught resilience.

Holtz’s inspiration: His passion built character. Favorite quotes: “It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.” “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” “Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you respond to it.” “No one has ever drowned in sweat.” “When all is said and done, more is said than done.” 

His 100 wins, including the 1993 FSU upset, shaped ND’s legacy. Condolences to his family—his spirit endures.
