Northern Indiana Spring Yard Checklist

Spring is finally here, so it’s time to consider getting your lawn and garden in shape. March and April are great months to prepare your lawn for warmer weather. Here are some recommended lawn care tasks that you should consider as we enter spring:

  1. Clean up your lawn – Start by cleaning up any debris that may have accumulated on your lawn over the winter. Rake up leaves or dead grass to promote healthy growth and reduce disease risk. You can also remove dead branches or twigs that may have fallen on your lawn.
  2. Aerate your lawn – Aerate your lawn helps reduce soil compaction, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots of your grass more easily. This is especially important if you have heavy clay soil. You can rent an aerator or hire a professional to do the job for you.
  3. Fertilize your lawn – March and April are good months to fertilize your lawn. Use a slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth and reduce the risk of burning your grass. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer package, as over-fertilization can harm your lawn.
  4. Control weeds – Spring is the time when weeds start to grow. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weed seeds from germinating. You can also manually remove any weeds that have already sprouted.
  5. Seed your lawn – If it has bare patches, spring is a good time to seed them. Choose a grass seed that is appropriate for your region and soil type. Spread the seed evenly over the bare areas and water the area regularly.
  6. Water your lawn – As the weather warms up, your lawn will need more water. Water your lawn deeply and infrequently rather than frequently and shallowly. This helps to promote deeper root growth and reduce the risk of disease.
